Jammu to lead the way in renewable energy as City of Solar
Renewable energy is gaining momentum due to increasing global concerns for sustainable development and climate change.
India has set an ambitious target to achieve 40% of its total energy capacity through non-fossil fuel-based sources by 2030 under the Paris Agreement.
To meet this goal, the Renewable Energy target was set at 175 GW by 2022, including 100 GW of solar energy.
The Indian government has launched multiple schemes to promote Solar PV technology, which is broadly classified into ground-mounted and rooftop utilities. MNRE has been actively developing capacity since 2016.
The use of RE is becoming increasingly important as the world focuses on mitigating the impacts of climate change and promoting sustainable development.
Indian government has set an ambitious target of achieving 40% of its total installed energy capacity through non-fossil fuel-based sources by 2030 as part of its Nationally Determined Contribution under the Paris Agreement.
To achieve this target, the government has set a Renewable Energy target of 500 GW to be achieved by 2030, up from the initial target of 175 GW by 2022.
Solar energy is one of the most widely used renewable energy sources in India, and it can be generated through ground-mounted and rooftop utilities. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has launched several schemes to promote the development of technologies since 2016.
One such scheme is the Central subsidy of 40% for rooftops up to 3 KW and 20% for systems from 3 KW to 10 KW capacity, as well as an additional subsidy of 25% from the UT for the residents of Jammu city under Jammu Solar City.
These incentives are aimed at encouraging private residential consumers to adopt solar power and make the scheme more attractive. To implement this scheme, the Jammu and Kashmir Energy Development Agency has been designated as the State Nodal Agency.
The adoption of rooftop solar power can help address power outages in the city of Jammu through distributed generation on the roofs of homes and business establishments.
Distributed generation is less vulnerable to power outages caused by events such as storms or transmission line failures, which can help to reduce the impact of power outages by spreading out the energy generation across multiple locations.
In addition to this, the use of rooftop solar power can help to reduce the strain on the grid. During peak demand, when large numbers of people are drawing power from the grid, it puts a strain on the power infrastructure and increases the risk of power outages.
Solar Power Revolution: Jammu’s Push towards Renewable Energy
In Jammu, regular power cuts occur during summers as the demand for power increases and the supply from the grid is not enough to meet the needs. By using solar power, homes and businesses can reduce their reliance on the grid during peak hours, which can help to alleviate the burden on the grid and reduce the risk of power outages.
Solar PV systems can help regulate the voltage in a power system, which is particularly important in areas with weak or unstable power systems like Jammu during the summer.
By injecting power into the system at a specific voltage, solar PV systems can help to stabilize the voltage and improve the quality of the power by reducing fluctuations.
In turn, helps to reduce the harmonics in the power signal, improving the quality of power even further. Adoption of solar power can have significant benefits for the city of Jammu.
This including reducing the impact of power outages, reducing the strain on the grid, and improving the quality of power by regulating voltage and reducing harmonics.
With the government’s push for renewable energy and the various incentives provided, the adoption of solar power is likely to increase in the coming years, making it a viable and sustainable option for the city of Jammu.
